Diagram showing the public and private water linesYou may have discovered that all or a portion of the water service piping located at your address is lead, galvanized or unknown. The service line is owned by the property owner from the meter to the house. If this line is lead or galvanized, it is possible that the pipes inside your home are also lead or galvanized. All of the water lines beginning at the meter are owned by the property owner.

Lead piping can corrode and dissolve lead into the water line coming into your home, causing serious health problems.

Galvanized pipe tends to be very corrosive, and it can be an indication of a lead connection, which should be investigated by you or your plumber and then considered for replacement.

Due to the negative health effects associated with lead, federal regulations have been developed to protect public health by minimizing lead levels in drinking water. Therefore, we strongly encourage you to have your private service line plumbing evaluated for replacement by a licensed plumber as soon as possible.

Below is information from the State of Kansas about service lines potentially containing lead and information about filtering your water after replacement of your service line.
