In 1998, the cities of Newton and North Newton signed an ordinance to reinstate the Historic Preservation Commission. The Newton/North Newton Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) has been active in guiding the community in the preservation of historic structures, preservation incentives, and education in our cultural heritage. Both the City of Newton and City of North Newton are a designated Certified Local Government (CLG) by the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO). This allows the HPC, with continued training, to perform design review on projects affecting listed historic properties.
