An open house has been set to gather public input about the City’s limits on dog ownership and proposals for a new dog park. The come-and-go meeting will be in the third-floor conference room at City Hall.
The City Commission is considering changes to the pet ordinance, which currently limits each residence to two dogs over the age of 6 months, with the following exceptions:
- You can have one additional dog if it is a certified public safety dog or a certified assistive animal for a disabled person.
- You can have one additional dog if you have a Kansas foster home animal shelter license and the additional dog is a foster animal.
City staff have reviewed the dog limits in a number of nearby cities:
- Andover: 4 dogs (with breed restrictions)
- Derby: 4 dogs
- McPherson: 3 dogs
- North Newton: 2 dogs, with one additional possible if a service animal
- Wichita: 4 dogs (with breed restrictions)
The following cities limit the total number of dogs and cats combined, as follows:
- Bel Aire: 4 pets
- El Dorado: 4 pets
- Hutchinson: 4 pets
- Park City: 3 pets (with breed restrictions)
- Valley Center: 4 pets
