The First New Homeland: Mennonite Migrations to and from Polish Prussia in 16-18th Centuries
Dr. Michał Targowski, assistant professor Nicolaus Copernicus University, Toruń, Poland

In the mid-16th century the part of northern Poland known as “Royal Prussia” or “Polish Prussia” became a safe haven for Anabaptists fleeing religious persecution in Western Europe. After two centuries of developing their settlements and congregations, many Mennonites were forced again to look for a new homeland and leave Polish territories. What made them come and go? What kind of heritage did they bring to Poland and what did they take with them as they moved to new destinations in Prussia and Russia? Dr. Targowski will expand on these questions and explain the great importance of these early migrations both for Mennonites and their neighbors.
